When Wilhelm was a little Willie (pun intended) he was big into his metal. However, as Willy grew bigger (yup....) he grew out of metal and broadened his horizon. However, Wilhelm became very sad at the state of current metal when listening to the sampler CD he gets with his Rock Sound and Metal Hammer magazines. None of the music sounded interesting and most bands obviously spent more time at Toni and Guy getting a haircut than writing and rehearsing proper songs (I mean YOU, Bring me the Horizon. Or should that be Bring me the Mirror?)
After a long drunken rant in the pub one of Wilhelm’s mates came to the rescue and burnt a CD of his current favourites. Granted, some of it wasn’t very good but a few songs stood out. One of them was Death in Fire by Amon Amarth. The reason why it stood out was because of the fact that it didn’t have blast beats but a mid-tempo groove you can shake your hair or your booty at. Wilhelm went out and bought the album and wasn’t disappointed.
Sure, there’s silly cover art, silly lyrics and more growling than in a lion’s cage at the zoo, but there’s also plenty of positive points. The afore mentioned Death in Fire with its melodic riffs and double bass drums, the groove of Where Silent Gods Stand Guard (Silly title indeed), the melodic intro of Across the Rainbow Bridge (didn’t I tell you, the titles and lyrics are silly?) are all very refreshing songs in between the endless shitty screamo bands who all sound the same.
